Aldosterone is a hormone that regulates the balance of sodium and potassium in the body. It is produced by the adrenal gland and is released into the bloodstream in response to low blood pressure or high levels of potassium. Aldosterone binds to a receptor in kidney cells, which causes an increase in the reabsorption of sodium from the kidneys. This leads to an increase in extracellular fluid volume, which can be observed as a rise in blood pressure. Aldosterone also has natriuretic effects, decreasing levels of plasma natriuretic peptide (NPP) and increasing levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). The physiological effects of aldosterone are mediated through its ability to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity.
