Alfacalcidol is a form of vitamin D that is used to treat metabolic disorders such as hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism. It is a potent inducer of enzymes in the liver, which convert vitamin D into its active form. Alfacalcidol has been shown to be effective in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Alfacalcidol has also been shown to have calcium-regulating properties in the body. This drug may also be used for the treatment of congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus type 2. Alfacalcidol is metabolized by hydroxylation to 25-hydroxycalcifediol and then to calcitriol, which binds with calcium ions in order to regulate serum calcium levels. This drug can be administered orally or intravenously.
