Allicin is a compound that can be extracted from garlic. Allicin has shown to have antibacterial efficacy against oral pathogens and sodium citrate has been shown to increase the allicin content of garlic. Apoptosis is a process of programmed cell death, which may be induced by allicin through the activation of caspases and the inhibition of anti-apoptotic proteins. Allicin also has antioxidant properties that may contribute to its ability to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cells against oxidative damage. Allicin also shows synergistic effects when used with other antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics or antifungals.
