Allocholic acid is a hydroxylated derivative of allo-inositol. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of peptide hormones and is used in the treatment of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. Allocholic acid also inhibits molecules that inhibit enzymes, such as phosphodiesterase and lipase, which are involved in the breakdown of fat. The biological sample preparation methods have been optimized for the extraction of allocholic acid from human feces. The optimum pH for allocholic acid is 4.5-5.0. Allocholic acid can be used to inhibit prostate cancer cells and rat liver microsomes, which are important for the metabolism of fatty acids in the body. The magnesium salt form is more soluble than other salts, making it easier to use in solution form.
