Ancymidol is a drug that is used to treat symptoms of pulmonary diseases such as bronchitis, tuberculosis and asthma. It belongs to the class of compounds known as phytoestrogens, which are plant-derived compounds that have estrogen-like effects in mammals. Ancymidol has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in tissue culture and dry weight measurements of rat liver microsomes. It inhibits the growth of fungi by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a sterol found in fungal cell membranes, thereby causing leakage from the cells. Ancymidol also inhibits root formation in wild-type strains but not f. sporotrichioides mutants. This drug has been shown to be effective against postharvest decay in plants and can be used for logistic regression analysis for plant physiology research.
