Amifostine is a thiol-containing dihydrochloride that is used to protect normal tissues from the cytotoxic effects of ionizing radiation. It is an antioxidant that may have some protective effects against radiation damage. Amifostine has been shown to be effective in optimizing tissue culture, muscle, and intestinal cells. It also has been shown to be effective in vivo with the use of techniques such as quantification and site-specific dosimetry. In vitro studies have shown that amifostine activates DNA repair enzymes, which leads to increased production of DNA and RNA synthesis. Amifostine's active metabolite was found to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis.
