N-(2-Aminoethyl)biotinamide is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their synthesis of proteins. It binds to the peptidyl transferase center of the ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis. This compound has been shown to inhibit the polymerization of a variety of synthetic polymers, including N-isopropylacrylamide and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), by acting as a chemical initiator. The uptake of this compound is low in cells, which may be due to its ability to bind with cholinergic receptors on cells. N-(2-Aminoethyl)biotinamide has been tested for use as a fluorescent probe for detection in homogeneous assays. This compound can also act as a chemical chaperone and be used to conjugate other molecules.
