The cis form has a trans-azobenzene chromophore and the trans form has an azobenzene chromophore. When exposed to light of appropriate wavelength, the trans form will convert into the cis form. This reversible process is called photoisomerization. 4-Amino-N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-phenylalanine methyl ester has been used as a biomaterial with applications in the areas of photoresponsive peptides and polymers, as well as for use in biosensors and other lab equipment.
