2-Aminoquinoxaline is a quinoxaline derivative that has a potent inhibitory effect on mitochondrial biogenesis. It is produced by the oxidation of lapachol and inhibits mitochondrial protein synthesis. 2-Aminoquinoxaline has been shown to have a protective effect on cardiac muscle cells and attenuates oxidative stress in rats. This drug also induces autophagy, which is the process by which cytoplasmic components are degraded for energy production, and improves the survival of knockout mice. 2-Aminoquinoxaline has two isomers: 2-aminoquinoxaline N-oxide (2AAO) and 2-aminoquinoxaline S-oxide (2AQO). The former is more potent than the latter with regard to its ability to induce autophagy and protect against oxidative stress. The hydroxyl group present in 2AAO appears to be important for its biological activity. 2AAO also absorbs ultraviolet light
