Amopyroquine is a pyrazole ring-containing compound that has antimicrobial activity. It is used to treat bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as other infectious diseases. Amopyroquine inhibits the growth of anaerobic bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. The drug also binds to polymerase chain reaction enzymes and cell nuclei, preventing the production of bacterial DNA. In vitro assays have shown amopyroquine to be nontoxic in concentrations up to 10 mM, with no observed adverse effects on human cells.
