(S)-Anabasine is a compound that inhibits the transcriptional regulation of biological processes. It has been shown to inhibit nitrogen-containing compounds, such as nitric oxide and nitrate, from binding to the heme moiety of cytochrome P450 enzymes. This inhibition causes a decrease in the production of reactive oxygen species, which are harmful to cells. (S)-Anabasine also has synergistic effects with other compounds and can be used in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria. The plant metabolism of anabasine has not been studied extensively and more research is needed.
