Description

Andrographolide is a natural compound that has been used as a traditional medicine to treat infectious diseases. It has hypoglycemic effects, which are due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme alpha-glucosidase and the release of glucose from the liver. Andrographolide also has antiinflammatory properties and can be used for coronary heart disease prevention. Andrographolide binds to response elements in the promoter region of gene promoters, causing an increase in transcriptional activity. This compound also inhibits P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is a transporter protein that moves drugs out of cells, making it more effective. The concentration-time curve of andrographolide has shown time-dependent binding with DNA in vitro, with a maximum binding at 500 μM. This drug binds to basic proteins in vivo and can be used as an inhibitor of p-glycoprotein (P-gp).
