Aureusidin is a naturally occurring compound that is found in the flowers of the plant, tuberosa. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent for centuries and is believed to be effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Aureusidin has been shown to inhibit the oxidative injury of mitochondria by binding to membrane phospholipids and preventing lipid peroxidation. This inhibition prevents the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol and subsequent activation of caspases in cells. This compound also binds to toll-like receptor 4 on cell surfaces and inhibits the inflammatory response. Aureusidin may also have potential as an anti-cancer drug due to its ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
