Aleuritic acid is a fatty acid that is found in the seed of the plant Aleurites moluccana and has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It has also been shown to be effective as a solvent for removing sodium salts from wastewater. Aleuritic acid has shown cytotoxic effects on colorectal adenocarcinoma cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cellular respiration through inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport. This acetate extract has also been shown to improve locomotor activity in mice and is not associated with any drug interactions. Studies have also shown that this compound can cause metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, and hyperlipidemia when given at high doses.
