Medetomidine is a sedative drug that belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-2 adrenergic agonists. Medetomidine binds to and activates α-2 receptors in the central nervous system, which causes sedation, anesthesia, and vasodilation. Medetomidine has been shown to have significant effects on neuronal death and mitochondrial membrane potential. It also has been shown to inhibit enzyme activities, such as 2-adrenergic receptor activity, toll-like receptor activity, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity. Medetomidine has also been shown to induce locomotor activity in experimental models. Atipamezole is an antagonist of medetomidine and reverses its effects by blocking the α-2 receptors and preventing it from activating them. Atipamezole also blocks other drugs that are considered "α-2 agonists" or "α-2 antagonists."
