Angelic acid is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been shown to have antioxidative properties. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation in vitro. Angelic acid also possesses covalent linkages with tiglic acid, which may be responsible for its antioxidant properties. Angelic acid has been used as an additive in cosmetics, such as creams and lotions, and its structural analysis can be performed using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique can be used to identify the presence of angelic acid in water vapor samples. Angelic acid is structurally similar to methyl ethyl alcohol, but does not possess any of the toxic effects associated with this compound. Angelic acid sodium salts are produced by reacting angelic acid with sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate under reflux conditions
