Algestone acetophenide is a progestin that inhibits ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovary. It also prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining. Algestone acetophenide is used in combination with estradiol benzoate as a contraceptive. Algestone acetophenide has been shown to have carcinogenic potential, specifically in fatty cells and in abdominal surgery patients. The compound has been shown to have physiological effects such as controlling blood pressure and regulating cholesterol levels. It also increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, especially in women who smoke or are over age 35.
