Atropine is a naturally occurring plant alkaloid that is used as an antidote to poisoning by organophosphate nerve agents and to treat mydriasis, cycloplegia and bradycardia. It is also used for the symptomatic relief of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive airways diseases. Atropine has been shown to inhibit the activity of epoxidase, which converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins, thereby preventing inflammation in the respiratory tract. Atropine has also been shown to have cardiac effects by inhibiting the action of acetylcholine on the sinoatrial node, prolonging the refractory period and increasing heart rate. The basic structure of atropine is a tertiary amine with two adjacent nitrogen atoms that are attached to a carbonyl group (C=O) and two methyl groups (-CH3).
