The binding between 5AMIN and colchicine inhibits the polymerization of microtubules, which are necessary for cell division. 5AMIN also has been shown to have anti-leukemic activity in vitro and in vivo against human leukemia cells. The anti-leukemic activity of 5AMIN is due to its ability to cause DNA damage through the induction of caspase 3, an enzyme that plays a role in apoptosis. This compound is highly active at nanomolar concentrations and is biodegradable.
