3-Amino-2-piperidinone is a metabolite of ornithine, which is a nonessential amino acid. It is produced by the metabolism of arginine and lysine, both of which are essential amino acids. 3-Amino-2-piperidinone has been found in urine samples from patients with bladder cancer and hyperornithinemia. It has also been detected in saccharomyces cerevisiae strain during energy metabolism experiments.
