Adipic dihydrazide is a reactive and explosive chemical that has been used to make explosives, propellants, and other products. It is also an important industrial chemical with applications in the production of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Adipic dihydrazide reacts readily with water vapor to form hydrogen gas and adiponitrile. The rate constant for this reaction is one of the fastest known for any organic compound. Adipic dihydrazide has been shown to inhibit P-glycoprotein-mediated transport in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which may be beneficial in treating infectious diseases. This drug also has antimicrobial properties against a wide range of microorganisms including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
