4-Amino-3-methylpyridine is an analog of the chemical compound 4-amino-2,6-dimethylpyridine. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in alcohols and insoluble in water. 4-Amino-3-methylpyridine can be hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid or thionyl chloride to form 3,4-diaminopyridine. This analog can be synthesized by reacting 3,4-diaminopyridine with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride. The reaction product can then be purified by column chromatography or crystallization. Crystallization involves dissolving the product in a suitable solvent such as dimethylformamide and then cooling it to allow crystals to form on the bottom of the flask. 4AMPP has been shown to catalyze reduction reactions in organic solvents under mild conditions, as well as being able to modify various functional groups.
