Description:Alosetron is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that is used in the treatment of severe diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Alosetron has been shown to decrease the frequency of spontaneous contractions and increase the number of contractions induced by acetylcholine in the rabbit ileum. Alosetron also inhibits activity of kappa opioid receptors and enzymes such as esterases, carboxylesterases, and phospholipases. Toxicity studies have shown that alosetron does not affect male reproductive organs or female fertility.
