This compound is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other pharmaceutical compounds, such as fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. 2AP inhibits the activity of the enzyme fatty acid synthase by binding to the thiolate moiety on cysteine residues near the active site and thus preventing substrate binding. This inhibition results in a decrease in fatty acid synthesis, which leads to cell death.
