It is synthesized from coumarins in nature, but also can be synthesized in the laboratory. This compound has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by forming a covalent bond with the bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase, preventing the synthesis of DNA. 6-Amino-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin has also been shown to have anti cancer properties.
