Acetyl-b-alanine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is synthesized in the body. It has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as acute ischemic stroke and depression. Acetyl-b-alanine binds to glutamate and prevents it from being converted into glutamine, which leads to increased levels of glutamate and decreases levels of glutamine. This can lead to an increase in the production of energy through aerobic glycolysis, which may have antidepressant effects. Acetyl-b-alanine also inhibits protein synthesis by competing with other amino acids for binding sites on ribosomes. Acetyl-b-alanine has been shown to have no effect on body mass index or chloride levels when given at high doses.
