Z-beta-alanine amide is a modified beta-alanine amide. Beta-alanine amides are usually synthesized through the addition of a primary amino group to the beta-carbon of a beta-alanine. This modification can be achieved by reacting an alkyl bromoacetate with a beta-amino acid in the presence of a base such as sodium methoxide, potassium tert-butoxide, or sodium hydride. Z-beta-alanine amide has also been shown to have potent antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It is resistant to azides and chlorides and is stable at high pH values. The synthesis of Z-beta-alanine amide can be achieved through a two step process involving the reaction of benzyl chloride with an aminopropanol derivative followed by hydrolysis with hydrazine hydrate.
