L-Arginine beta-naphthylamide hydrochloride (L-Arg) is a chemical compound that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme arginase. This inhibition prevents the conversion of L-arginine to urea and ornithine, which are essential for bacterial growth. L-Arg has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on a mutant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was resistant to ertapenem. The IC50 value of L-Arg was found to be 2.5 mM, with an EC50 value of 10 μM at 37°C in human liver cells. It has a pKa of 9.0 and an optimum pH of 7.2, making it more acidic than most other compounds in this class.
