Azure II is a phosphotungstic acid that can be used to identify chemical species in urine samples. It can also be used as a reagent to measure the growth of cells and tissue cultures, as well as for immunohistochemical studies. Azure II is synthesized from benzalkonium chloride and tungsten dioxide, which are mixed in equal proportions. The chemical species of Azure II are activated by heating it at 150°C for 20 minutes before use. The molecular weight of Azure II is approximately 1,000 Da. This product has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in Sprague-Dawley rats with ichthyosiform erythroderma (fish-scale skin).
