Aluminum(III) fluoride is used in analytical chemistry for determining hydroxyl ions, which are present in the plasma mass spectrometry process. The metastable form can also react with sodium carbonate to produce hydrogen gas and aluminum oxide, which can then be processed into aluminum metal.
