Description:Allophycocyanin is a light-harvesting pigment that can be extracted from the cyanobacterium phycocyanin. It has been shown to have localization in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells, as well as in the cell's plasma membrane. Allophycocyanin has been used for assays of growth factors, such as EGF and PDGF, which regulate cellular proliferation and differentiation. Allophycocyanin also exhibits optical properties that are dependent on its environment and position within a cell. The physiological effects of Allophycocyanin have been studied by immobilizing it on polystyrene particles or monoclonal antibodies.
