Alpha-amyrin is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol that has been isolated from the genus Oleanum and Carthamus tinctorius. It has been shown to have an inhibitory dose of 10mg/kg, which is higher than the inhibitory doses of other plant compounds. Alpha-amyrin inhibits prostaglandin E2 production in vitro, but does not affect cyclooxygenase activity. Alpha-amyrin also has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with the amino group of proteins and nucleic acids. It can bind to DNA in a manner similar to some drugs used for chemotherapy. Alpha-amyrin also has chemical structures similar to protocatechuic acid, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
