4-Amidinobenzoic acid hydrochloride is a catalytic molecule that inhibits serine proteases. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the proteolytic activity of trypsin and chymotrypsin when used at concentrations of 3 mM or higher. 4-Amidinobenzoic acid hydrochloride functions by binding to the active site of the enzyme, preventing access to the substrate. This inhibition is reversible, with a half-life of about 10 minutes. The inhibitory constants for 4-amidinobenzoic acid hydrochloride are in the range of 1 μM to 100 μM.
