2-Aminobenzhydrol is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be an efficient and selective hydrogen donor for the copper-catalyzed reaction of arylgalactoses with anilines. It is a potent inhibitor of galactose oxidase, which catalyzes the conversion of glucose to galactose. 2-Aminobenzhydrol inhibits galactose oxidase by forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the main group amine nitrogen atom in the enzyme. This interaction results in a reversible, competitive inhibition with respect to substrate binding. 2-Aminobenzhydrol has shown potent inhibitory activity against other enzymes such as ceruloplasmine oxidase and urate oxidase.
