The mechanism of this reaction may be due to an amidation followed by an oxidative deamination or an oxidative decarboxylation of the amide. 4-Acetamidobenzyl alcohol has been shown to oxidize primary alcohols in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, yielding an acetaldehyde and a ketone.
