It reacts with benzoate in the presence of acid catalyst to produce phenyl groups. 4-Acetoxybiphenyl has been shown to inhibit peptide binding, which may lead to protein degradation, and also have a strong reaction with chloride ions. 4-Acetoxybiphenyl is not active against tissues and its metabolic product profile is not well characterized.
