The chemical structure of acetoxyvalerenic acid is similar to that of benzodiazepine drugs like diazepam. Acetoxyvalerenic acid has been shown to inhibit GABA-A receptors in animal studies and human clinical trials. This compound also reduces the amount of time that it takes for mice to fall asleep by increasing the amount of time spent in REM sleep stages.
