ACTH (1-4) is an acidic peptide hormone that is synthesized in the anterior pituitary gland and released in response to corticotropin releasing factor. It has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, or TNFα. ACTH (1-4) also has a stabilizing effect on leukocytes and chemotactic properties for neutrophils. This peptide is synthesized from the precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC) by removal of the N-terminal octapeptide.
