Product Information
Apamin is an antagonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It binds to the receptor and blocks the binding of acetylcholine, thereby preventing the activation of muscle cells. Apamin also binds to other receptors and ion channels that are involved in neurotransmission and regulation of cell function, including a calcium channel in liver cells. The binding of apamin to these receptors causes hyperpolarization of their membranes, which blocks the entry of calcium ions into the cells. This inhibition results in a decrease in cellular metabolism and protein synthesis. Apamin has been shown to have cytostatic effects on liver cells by inhibiting cyclase activity. Apamin also inhibits toll-like receptor signaling pathways that regulate immune responses by binding to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4).
