4-Amino-6-methylpyrimidine is a crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It has been shown to have regioselectivity in the formation of the 4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2(1H)-one isomer over the 6,4-dimethylpyrimidin-2(1H)-one isomer. Crystallographic data and analyses show that 4-Amino-6-methylpyrimidine has a helical structure with phenacyl groups at the N (amino) and N (sulfoxide) positions. The bonding between these two positions is through a sulfinyl group, which can be cleaved by aminolysis to form the corresponding amine or sulfone. 4-Amino-6-methylpyrmidine can also be prepared from phenacyl chloride and ammonium acetate.
