3²-Hydroxy-”5-cholenic Acid is a bile acid that binds to the nuclear receptor LXR. It is used in the treatment of alopecia areata and hepatitis, but has not been found to be effective for treating autoimmune diseases. 3²-Hydroxy-”5-cholenic Acid can also be used to prepare samples for analysis by binding bile acids in blood serum, cell culture media, or other biological samples. 3²-Hydroxy-”5-cholenic Acid binds to the nuclear receptor LXR and activates gene transcription through a variety of mechanisms, including forming hydrogen bonds with DNA bases and hydroxyl groups with protein residues.
