3-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-butyric acid is a prodrug that is converted to 3-phenyl-2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid (3PDMPA) in the body. This compound has been shown to be an effective treatment of spasticity in animal models. 3PDMPA inhibits the enzyme malonate semialdehyde reductase, which blocks the conversion of malonic semialdehyde to succinic semialdehyde and inhibits the synthesis of succinyl coenzyme A. This leads to increased levels of acetylcholine, resulting in relief from muscle spasms. 3PDMPA is an oral drug that can be administered with or without food.
