Product Information
4-Hydroxy-4-phenylbutan-2-one is a β-unsaturated ketone that is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of benzofuran derivatives. It can be synthesized by the catalysis of choline with hydrogen sulfate and aluminium or by dehydration of 2,5-diketones. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve an initial dehydration step followed by a cyclization. 4-Hydroxyphenylacetone has been shown to react with hydrogen sulfate to produce 4-hydroxyphenylbutan-2-one, which can be dehydrated to form 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenylbutan-2-one. This product has been shown to have antiinflammatory effects in vitro.
