This heterocycle inhibits estradiol binding to estrogen receptors by competitive inhibition. The hydroxyl group on 2-bromobenzothiophene can form a covalent bond with thiols, which are abundant in proteins involved in inflammation. It also reacts with other reactive functional groups such as carbonyl groups or aromatic hydrocarbons.
