Formycin has been used as an antiseptic, but is no longer in use due to its toxicity. It is also a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth and was used in the past for treating tuberculosis. The methylation of KG produces formaldehyde, which can react with ethylene glycol to produce ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME). EGME is highly toxic and can cause lung damage.
