2-Ethylhexyl benzoate is a lipase inhibitor that is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient. 2-Ethylhexyl benzoate has been found to inhibit pancreatic lipase by binding to its active site, thereby preventing the hydrolysis of triglycerides. The binding of 2-Ethylhexyl benzoate to the active site may be due to its similarity in shape and size to the fatty acid substrate. This inhibition of lipase activity leads to decreased production of triacylglycerols and free fatty acids from fat digestion. In turn, this decreases cholesterol synthesis and absorption. 2-Ethylhexyl benzoate also has a vibrational frequency shift that can be measured using spectroscopy.
