Phenanthrene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is an intermediate in the oxidation of phenanthrene. Phenanthrene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid can be detected by incubating samples with potassium dichromate and hydrochloric acid. The reaction produces a red color that can be measured spectrophotometrically. The presence of phenanthrene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid in biological fluids can be used to identify the presence of gram negative bacteria such as Proteus or Escherichia coli, which are able to metabolize this compound. This compound is also produced by fungi such as Penicillium citrinum or Aspergillus niger when grown on glucose as a carbon source. Phenanthrene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid is also found in plants such as black currant (Ribes
