2-Benzylidenecyclohexanone is a dithiocarbamic compound. It is reduced to the corresponding amine by catalytic hydrogenation. This reaction proceeds via an allylic amination reaction and the formation of a nitro group. The reduction products are 2-benzylidene cyclohexanamine and 3,5-dimethylaniline. The compound class includes olefinic and dipolar compounds that are effective antibacterial agents against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Enterococcus faecalis.
2-Benzylidenecyclohexanone has been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis through the inhibition of bacterial enzymes involved in the synthesis of proteins vital for cell division. This process is due to the formation of strong hydrogen bonds with amino acids in proteins and the electrophilic
