Calcium butyrate is a calcium salt of butyric acid. It binds to calcium in the body and prevents the absorption of fats. Calcium butyrate is used in the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as hyperlipidemia, hypocalcemia, and vitamin D deficiency. It has been shown to have clinical relevance in cancer treatment due to its ability to bind to hydrochloric acid. Calcium butyrate has also been shown to have an effect on polymerase chain reactions (PCR) by inhibiting human DNA polymerases. This inhibition may be due to its ability to bind with free radicals that are generated during PCR reactions. Calcium butyrate has been shown to inhibit cancer growth and inflammatory bowel disease by binding fatty acids and proteins.
