PTH-tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, melatonin and dopamine. It is found in the human body and has been studied for its potential use as a drug to treat mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and sleep problems. PTH-tryptophan is synthesised from the essential amino acid tryptophan through a chemical ionisation process. The sample preparation involves adding hydrochloric acid to the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) sample in order to hydrolyse the proteins in the sample, releasing tryptophan into solution. The linear regression analysis was performed on the data obtained by ultraviolet spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The chromatographic separation of PTH-tryptophan was achieved using high performance liquid chromatography with a tandem mass spectrometer detector.
